Creating Employment Opportunities Through NREGS: Sonali’s Community Initiative
In Takeharsh Gram Panchayat, limited local employment opportunities often force tribal families to migrate in search of work. Recognising the impact of seasonal unemployment on women and their families, Sonali Nirgude took the initiative to promote employment opportunities through the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS).
Having received guidance and leadership training through BELIEFS Trust, Sonali began engaging with women in the village to discuss livelihood challenges and the opportunities available under NREGS. She helped women understand their rights under the programme, prepared lists of job seekers, and supported the submission of work demand applications to local and district authorities.
Through continuous follow-up and collective mobilisation, Sonali played an important role in strengthening the implementation of NREGS in Takeharsh. A total of 101 people registered their demand for work, and employment opportunities were generated for 40 individuals.
The initiative also resulted in the commencement of public works focused on soil and water conservation, including stone bund construction on agricultural land and desilting of the village pond. These activities not only generated wage employment but also contributed to drought mitigation and watershed development within the village.
By helping women access employment opportunities and engage with local governance systems, Sonali demonstrated how community leadership can strengthen livelihood security and promote sustainable rural development.
