In the tribal region of Trimbakeshwar Taluka, traditional crops such as finger millet (Nagli) and little millet (Varai) have long been an important part of local farming systems. However, low productivity caused by traditional cultivation practices and challenges related to pest management often limited the benefits that farmers could derive from these crops.
Sonali Chander Nirgude recognised these challenges within her community and decided to take action. Inspired by the Nagli–Varai Seed Production Initiative supported by BELIEFS Trust, she began working with women farmers in her village to improve agricultural practices and increase crop productivity.
Sonali mobilised local women and introduced them to the seed production programme implemented in collaboration with Mahabeej. She helped organise training sessions where women learned about nursery preparation, improved cultivation methods, seed production practices, and techniques for pest and disease management. Through these efforts, women farmers gained practical knowledge that enabled them to strengthen both crop production and seed quality.
Participation in the seed production programme helped farmers improve yields and adopt better farming practices. The initiative also contributed to the long-term availability of quality Nagli and Varai seeds within the community, supporting sustainable agriculture and local seed security.
Eight families from the village participated in the programme and benefited from increased agricultural production and additional income opportunities. Beyond economic gains, the initiative enhanced women’s confidence and participation in agricultural decision-making, while strengthening their understanding of improved seed production systems.
Through collective effort and local leadership, Sonali helped demonstrate how traditional crops can become a pathway for improved livelihoods, stronger community resilience, and sustainable agricultural development.
